Claude Monet’s Piles of Wheat series showcases monumental piles of wheat reaching fifteen to twenty feet high, near his farmhouse in Giverny. From 1890-1891, he painted the series both in the field and in the studio. The works were first showcased in a small exhibition space at Durand-Ruel Gallery in Paris in May 1891 to critical and financial success. The scenes vary from fall when the conical tops of the piers break the horizon, to winter when the stacks become shrouded in fields and hills. To Monet, the piles represented sustenance and survival, reflected in his additional works of poplars, Rouen Cathedral and his garden at Giverny. The Art Institute holds the world’s largest group of Monet’s Wheat Stacks.
