Claude Monet began painting The Petite Creuse River, one of three paintings of the same name, in April 1889. However, the landscape had changed significantly by the time he returned to the canvas later that spring. To reflect its former appearance, Monet opted to hire laborers to strip the foliage from a prominent oak tree rather than rearrange or restart the painting.
In March 1889, Monet traveled to the remote Creuse valley in the heart of France. He stayed there for three months, 24 of which he spent painting before returning to Giverny. The resulting works became the first collection of paintings created with a purposeful plan.
