Description

Cherry Tree – Hokusai 1829-1839

One of master Hokusai‘s paintings, the “Cherry Tree” portrays a natural spectacle typical of his native Japan. A duo of a bird and flower take the centre stage in his piece – a bullfinch and cherry blossoms – the nation’s emblematic tree. Slender branches bear the flowers, light pinkish-white in colour, a sight best enjoyed in the spring especially on the island of Hokkaido steeped with cherry trees. The other subject of the work – the bullfinch, is a stoutly-built black and gray-toned bird. The artist utilised a rare and precious hue – Prussian blue to colour the backdrop.
