The bold lines of the Japanese artist Hokusai are instantly recognizable, as seen in this painting of a dragonfly. He wanted to capture the movement of life and in so doing used strong lines to create a sense of power. His works focus on lines, space and rhythm as he simplifies forms to express his personal view of the world. Hokusai further amplifies his vision through use of colors, which, to him, were only decorative. Hence, he created minimalist palettes and even Nishiki-e (monochrome prints).
Dragonfly – Hokusai was created between 1827-1837 and although the original size was 26 x 37.5 cm, it is now in The Art Institute of Chicago. It is one of many beautiful Hokusai paintings on our website.
