This woodblock print by Hokusai is part of a series called “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” created between 1830 and 1832. Although the title suggests only 36 views, there are in fact 46 illustrations of the highest mountain in Japan. This print showcases why Hokusai is among Japan’s greatest artists – his skillful artistic expression and remarkable diversity of perspectives from which Mount Fuji is depicted.
Mount Fuji has an interesting history; it has been revered as a deity, and has also been a dormant volcano. In this particular view, it is present with a serene sky on top and a storm in the plain below. The juxtaposition of the tranquil mountain sides and tumultuous sky in the background creates an image of great solemnity.
