Description

Samurai – Hokusai – 1765-1775

This Print by the renowned Japanese artist Hokusai portrays the iconic Otani Hiroji III in the role of Kawazu no Saburo, in a play called Myoto-giku Izu no Kisewata, performed at the Ichimura theater in 1770. During his remarkable career, Hokusai produced many prints and designs of his stageplay characters that he was inspired by.

The painting captures a Samurai figure dressed in the characteristic traditional Japanese attire, brandishing its two katanas in a posturing gesture – an instantly recognizable symbol of Japanese culture today.
