It’s highly likely you have seen The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the renowned Japanese print that features on the cover of La mer de Debussy and even has its very own emoji.
But today we would like to present you with an equally important work by the same artist – the Self Portrait of Hokusai, created around 1830-1840. Who is behind this extraordinary masterpiece?
It starts in 1772 in Edo: twelve-year-old Tokitarô begins to learn wood engraving in a workshop. By the age of 18, he had joined the Katsukawa Shunshô’s workshop, a renowned master of Japanese prints, ‘ukiyo-e’ – ‘image of the floating world’. Here, Tokitarô perfects his mastery of the xylography technique, which he will use for the remainder of his life.
In 1830, the seventy-one-year-old Hokusai created his Self Portrait that tells us an important part of his story. Little did he know at the time, but his work would go on to influence countless people across the world.
