In 1884, renowned French artist Claude Monet journeyed to Bordighera on the Italian Riviera. He had initially planned on a three week stay, but ended up spending almost three months. In Monet’s letter to sculptor Auguste Rodin, he described his struggle to capture the luminous Mediterranean light, saying he was “fencing and wrestling, with the sun”. Despite the abundance of floral beauty in the area, however, Monet found it difficult to find satisfactory subjects for his paintings.
The painting featured in this article was captured from a mountain viewpoint, and it showcases how the trunks of local pines seem to intertwine and obscure any view of the waves in the Mediterranean. It’s an oil painting on canvas with dimensions of 65 x 80.8 cm, and is now held at The Art Institute of Chicago.
