Description

Boy in the Countryside – Monet – 1857

This energetic charcoal drawing of a boy in the countryside by Claude Monet comes from a sketchbook he kept when he was still a young man. Since none of his paintings from this period have survived, this piece offers an exceptionally rare glimpse of his early talent. His chosen subject, a native of his hometown Le Havre, could have been drawn naturally from life. The boy’s clothes cast a shadow on his features, yet the outlines of his apron remain defined and assured. Monet appears to have worked diligently, layering the pencil to recreate the tufts of grass and indenting the paper.
