The Departure of the Boats, Étretat – Monet – 1885
Monet’s painting of the departure of the boats at Étretat was made at the same time as another one we have on Tableaux du Monde: Boats on the Beach at Étretat. This duo of paintings is characterized by the same atmospheric quality, created when the French artist was living at the Hôtel Blanquet’s window. It was a rainy day during the autumn of 1885, so Monet made the best of his view to express his creativity. The artist has expertly employed pastel hues, giving the painting a moisture-infused look, while highlighting the shore at the same time. The spot is abuzz with activity: there are boats floating towards the dock, while people are already walking and sailing away. Furthermore, Monet gives himself some artistic license by adding touches of vibrant colors to represent the ships and the green and blue hues of the house in the right corner.
