Monet’s Corniche near Monaco, 1884
In 1884, Claude Monet visited the sun-drenched region of the French Riviera, spending time in Nice, Bordighera, and Menton. He focused his attention on a particular stretch of road: The Corniche, a winding mountain road leading from Nice to the Principality of Monaco. Captivated by the bright colors of the scenery, Monet documented his experience in a painting of dazzlingly vivid shades of blue, brown, and green, depicting the cliff illuminated by vibrant light and dramatic shadows. He gifted it to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam to spread his art in Van Gogh’s country. The painting is a classic example of Impressionism.
