Along the Seine, Bennecourt – Monet – 1868
In this painting of Monet’s Seine, his companion Camille Doncieux can be seen seated on an islet in the river that flows through Paris. She gazes towards the market town of Gloton, only a short distance from the town of Bennecourt, where she and the artist had likely rowed. This is the only piece of work to have survived from the couple’s brief stint in Gloton, which was recommended to Monet by the novelist Émile Zola as a secluded spot close to Paris. The pentimenti—visible traces of pre-existing paint beneath the surface—hint that Camille originally held a baby in her arms, or their newborn.
