Description
Pourville Cliff Walk – Monet – 1882
In 1882, French painter Monet left Paris for Normandy in the west of France in order to complete an expedition and to take a break from the personal and professional pressures he was facing. Three years prior, his companion Camille had passed away and France was going through a delicate period that had reflected on his art sales. Annoyed by the urban atmosphere of the port city of Dieppe, Monet moved to Pourville and lived in this fishing village until mid-year. It was there that he found his new source of inspiration.
The two young girls on the Pourville Cliff Walk painting are believed to be Marthe and Blanche, the elder daughters of Hoschedé, a renowned art critic. Monet opted for a unique artistic approach when creating this artwork by integrating figures into the landscape without disrupting the overall harmony of the painting. The small brush strokes used for the turf give an impression of motion in the wind.
X-rays reveal that Monet reduced the rocky outcrop to the right so as to maintain the composition’s balance between sea and sky.
