In the summer of 1901, Claude Monet spent time in Lavacourt where he had reserved a modest residence. Here, he painted Maison de Vétheuil – Monet. This municipality, located a short distance from his villa in Giverny, is crisscrossed by the Seine. He captured the scene from his terrace. This painting, along with about fifteen others from the same view of Lavacourt, was created in the afternoon. Another version of this painting was done at sunset, with shades of pink and orange illuminating the scene. Both of the nearly-square canvases show the Seine and the town, with a slice of the chapel featuring prominently in the works.
