Baby Roulin – Van Gogh – 1888
As an artist, Vincent Van Gogh portrayed the entire family of Joseph Roulin, the postman from Arles whose friendship he enjoyed. Of the Roulin’s youngest, Marcelle, he painted three portraits and two more with her mother. Van Gogh passed the smaller painting of Marcelle to his brother Theo, who, at the time, was expecting a baby of his own. Jo, Theo’s wife, wrote “I like to imagine that ours will be as strong, as healthy, and as beautiful as this one and that his uncle will one day consent to paint his portrait!”
Baby Roulin is one of the collection of Van Gogh paintings held by the National Gallery of Art. It measures 35 x 23.9 cm.
