Flower Field – Van Gogh – 1883
Flower Field by Van Gogh is a painting created by the celebrated Dutch artist in 1883. This was Van Gogh’s first garden painting and displays his primitive style of landscape depiction. The painting offers a sweeping look of blossoming tulip fields. It was Van Gogh’s second year in The Hague when he painted this canvas. It is commonly called a ‘flower bed’, and Van Gogh used multiple sharply-trimmed brush strokes, giving it a finer look compared to most of his other works. Geometric flowerbeds, a hallmark feature of Van Gogh’s Dutch background, pull a viewer into the scene. The foreground, observed from a low angle, appears to ascend suddenly, amplifying the low perspective in a panoramic manner. The dark shadows of the background highlights the huts and bare tree trunks in the distance, which creates a striking contrast with the bright colors of the foreground.
