Description
Fruit – Van Gogh – 1889
This painting, “Les Fruits”, was created by Van Gogh shortly after his release from an asylum. He had been recovering from the chaotic days when Paul Gauguin stayed with him in Arles. The artist was captivated by the shapes, colors and texture of the citrus in the wicker basket. He also enjoyed how their round shapes clashed with the braided sticks and the spiny cypress branches. Van Gogh mentioned in a letter to his brother that the painting had a “chic look,” which may have been caused by the addition of blue gardening gloves. This work demonstrates Van Gogh’s skill and bold application of paint, depicting the waxiness of the fruit, the material of the stems, and the softness of the gloves.
