Girl in White – Van Gogh – 1890
Girl in White is an autobiographical painting by Post-Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh. He completed this oil on canvas composition in less than a month before his suicide in 1890. Van Gogh had recently left the asylum, and he was desperate to start painting again, even though he was expecting a new fit of madness. In letters to his brother, the Dutch painter admitted that he could only portray sadness and loneliness in his work. He chose to depict the image of his own mind, filled with sorrows and emotions on this canvas, through the looks of a peasant woman. This is one of Van Gogh’s most moving works, eliciting feelings of desire from the viewer. The girl’s fragile body, her motionless arms with large hands, her lowered collarbones, and her wide, unseeing gaze are incredibly emotive. Soft summer greens surround the model, as if she was forgotten and abandoned by all.
