Laurels – Van Gogh (1888)
Oleanders were cheerful and vibrant flowers that continuously bloomed and produced strong new plants. In Van Gogh’s painting, The Oleanders (1888), the oleander is overflowing from a majolica vase, commonly used for his various still lifes in Arles. This work of art is thought to be poetically linked to Émile Zola’s novel, La Joie de Vivre, which Van Gogh had contrasted with an open Bible in one of his 1885 Nuenen still lifes.

The artist frequently used a majolica vase for his still lifes in Arles.
