Description
The Cypresses – Van Gogh – 1889
Vincent van Gogh’s The Cypresses was painted in 1889, shortly after the artist’s transfer to the mental asylum. Its subject is a cypress, a slender conifer of the Mediterranean landscape that Vincent found beautiful in terms of its lines and dimensions, likening it to an “Egyptian obelisk”. He would later express his appreciation of its role in a landscape, claiming that it “is the dark spot in a sunny landscape, but it’s one of the most interesting dark notes”. The painting is composed in a vertical format, with its treetops slicing through the sky.
