Description
The Drinkers – Van Gogh – 1890
During his time at Saint-Paul Hospital, the artist made several copies of the works of painters he admired, such as Van Gogh’s Drinkers, which enabled him to explore a more creative approach to his work. This painting was inspired by the woodcut of the four ages of the Drinker by Honoré Daumier . It is a parody of the four ages of man. The exaggerated facial expressions express Daumier’s unique sense of humor and convey his dark message of the consequences of alcoholism. According to experts, the greenish color fan used could be a reference to absinthe, a strong alcoholic drink.
