Tree – Hokusai – 1830-1832
At the age of 71, Hokusai published the immensely ambitious Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series – in reality, it was actually 46 prints, including this one, depicting a Tree in front of the mountain, signed by the artist himself. It was a culmination of all his knowledge, combining traditional Japanese printmaking techniques, Western perspective, as well as the apparent simplicity of the Rinpa school.
Each of the 46 prints offered a different point of view of the Fuji mountain, this one in particular displaying a scene from the plain. Despite Japan’s self-imposed isolation, a few of Hokusai’s works still made it overseas thanks to the Dutch East India Company. For example, his Manga collection which was already present in France from 1843. The Westerners had thanks to this book, a brief introduction to Japanese culture.
