Description

The Japanese Bridge by Monet, 1900

In 1890, Claude Monet purchased the property in Giverny, France where he would soon create his famous garden. Three years later, he began to transform the marshy area behind his home into a pond, and built a Japanese-style bridge leading over it. This bridge is the main feature of his painting The Japanese Bridge, part of a series of 18 works depicting the combination of lilies and greenery on the surface of the pond. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the original 89.8 x 101 cm painting, and visitors today can walk Monet’s gardens where the scene was created.
