Saintes Maries de la Mer – Van Gogh (1888)
In 1888, Van Gogh traveled to the small Mediterranean fishing town of Saintes Maries de la Mer where he painted this alley with thatched roofs. This sketch, among fifteen others, was passed on to the Dutch painter’s friend, artist Émile Bernard, to inform him of his activity. Through these poignant drawings, Van Gogh captured the essence of his paintings and created new compositions.
